BERKELEYBerkeley is an academic town, known for its engaging intellectual life. It is a cultural destination with its own symphony, repertory theaters and art museum. It is loaded with distinctive residential architecture; elegant curving streets and wonderful view homes in the hillside neighborhoods.
Home of the famed University of California and its superior educational opportunities, Berkeley has an incredible array of residential areas, cultural events, team sports, varied and plentiful shopping and attractive restaurants to please the most discriminating resident or visitor. The growth of technology companies in neighboring Emeryville has spurred the additional development of support businesses as well as a vibrant mix of retail and entertainment attractions appealing to all ages
ALBANYAlbany, immediately north of Berkeley, is full of charming homes many of which were built in the 20's and 30's. The city is a steadily growing community with a variety of shops and services. Solano Avenue, Albany's "Main Street", which runs through the city, boasts many small shops sidewalk cafes, as well as numerous full-dining establishments that offer everything from the simple to a variety of international dishes.
Albany's special bungalows offer a small town community feeling, yet provide the convenience being minutes away from Berkeley and San Francisco.
Within Albany itself you will find Golden Gate Fields, one of the largest thoroughbred racetracks in the States. Albany is known for having an exceptional school system which ranks in the 90th percentile in Alameda County.
EL CERRITOEl Cerrito known for its terrific bay views and easy commute to the city is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. This 3.9-square-mile city is blessed with a pleasant climate year-round. Its residents enjoy the 80-acre tree-lined Hillside Park open space, as well as 45 acres of parks, 18 acres of school recreational areas, and 38 acres of other amenities. These amenities include the Ohlone Greenway, a pleasantly landscaped area which runs along the BART right of way the length of the city and is popular with walkers, runners and bicyclists.
There are two BART stations in El Cerrito, and easy freeway access. El Cerrito has great public parks, a swimming and recreation center, library, the Mira Vista Golf and Country Club and is home to the Contra Costa Community Theater. A farmers market is held twice a week at the El Cerrito Plaza which recently underwent a complete renovation and now includes stores such as Albertson's, Barnes and Noble Books, and Starbucks Coffee.
El Cerrito schools are part of the West Contra Costa Unified School District and include a middle school, and El Cerrito High, and several well-respected private schools. El Cerrito Links
KENSINGTONKensington, located in the hills between El Cerrito and Berkeley Hills, offers a taste of small town living with homes that offer breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge in quiet neighborhoods. Kensington is a peaceful village in a prime location where one can indulge in plays, movies, theater, fishing, symphony events and recreational sports.
OAKLANDThis city on the eastern side of the Bay, Oakland is home to an internationally acclaimed zoo, a ballet and a major symphony. With so much to do this city offers plenty to keep folks on this side of the water entertained. In addition to great dining, beautiful architecture, and quaint tree-lined streets there is the magnetism of the hometown teams, the Raiders, the A's and the Warriors. Oakland is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the US. The city is connected to San Francisco and other proximate cities by the Bay Bridge, Tunnels and by BART ( the Bay Area Rapid Transit System).
PIEDMONTNestled in the coastal foothills on the east side of San Francisco Bay, Piedmont is a small community completely surrounded by the City of Oakland, conveniently located about 20 minutes from San Francisco and Walnut Creek. Approximately 11,000 residents live within the city's 1.8 square miles. Piedmont is highly regarded for its excellent school system and city services. Its moderate climate, tree-lined streets, and charming older homes make it an attractive place to live.
While predominantly residential, Piedmont is close to major urban centers in downtown Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Many residents work in other East Bay communities or in San Francisco.
Many people move to Piedmont for its excellent schools and cohesive, family-oriented neighborhoods, but they often stay after their children are grown. The numerous city services, active community life, and favorable location make Piedmont a town people like for generations.
